Co-founders of Girltrek, the largest health movement and nonprofit for Black women and girls in the United States. Ten years ago, 2 college friends, T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison, started a 10-week walking challenge that is now GirlTrek, a movement of 1 million Black women and counting.
“As I compose this email with tears in my eyes I want to say thank you. I thank God for you. For your vision, your tenacity, your diligence, determination, encouragement, feistiness, steadfastness, for everything you have within you that you have chosen to share with us. Today, October 17th, is actually my first day of the Spiritual Bootcamp. I participated in the first two bootcamps but my job has been so demanding that I have not remained committed to my commitment to walk at least 30 minutes a day for me. This makes my heart hurt because of that. Listening to the first day of the spiritual bootcamp has made me realize that I have to do this for ME.”
“I just want to thank you for this Black History Bootcamp. I only discovered it a few weeks ago and I must say, it is a lifesaver. The stories have been a saving grace, especially on days when I feel the world pressing down on my back. I recently listened to the episode about Nina Simone, who happens to be one of my favorite singers. When you talked about the fear that black women feel, it clearly resonated with me.”
GirlTrek unapologetically serves the needs and desires of Black women by inspiring and mobilizing Black women everywhere to put themselves first by practicing radical self-care through walking and spending transformative time in nature and the outdoors. With each walk, with each challenge, with each 30-minute commitment completed, GirlTrek is creating a movement, a revolution centered on self-love. With 1 million members and counting, GirlTrek is the most effective public health solution in the country.
